First Impressions

The packaging is really nice. I have gone through at least 5 or 6 bottles of Herbivore Botanicals’ Lapis Oil so I know what their boxes feel like. It’s like very matte and smooth with a hint of raised gold foil. The presentation is very luxurious.

That said, the soap isn’t wrapped in plastic inside the box. It comes just loose. I don’t mind this as I ordered mine from Sephora and it was shipped directly to me, but I probably wouldn’t purchase it off the shelf in-store since someone could tamper with it. You just pop the top open and there it is.

Review

For some reason, I expected the soap to be rough. But to my surprise it actually glides against the skin. It feels silky smooth.

It doesn’t get sudsy but still feels like it’s doing it’s job. It leaves a thick film which I rub in and rinse off in the shower, which took a few days to get used to. It’s not a “light” soap by any means, but the heaviness makes me “feel” it working. It weirds me out a bit because I like things that feel “squeaky clean” and this isn’t it.

I’m not one to buy expensive bars of soap because I always felt like soap bars are wasteful. They just clean and get rinsed off right away- it has barely any time to work before it’s down the drain.

This bar has made me change the way I think about bar soaps.

Since charcoal is the holy grail of cleanliness (see: toothpastes without aloe) it’s supposed to be miraculous on acne-prone and sensitive skin.

So..how effective is the charcoal?

It seems to work well at keeping acne at bay- I haven’t had any major breakouts since using the soap. My face feels very clean after using it, albeit a bit dry.

Although it’s thick, it doesn’t leave a black film. So unlike charcoal toothpastes, this soap DOES NOT make a mess. It’s like any other soap!

I meant to buy a portable soap container to hold the bar and let it dry but never got around to it. To my surprise, it dries quickly after your shower and doesn’t melt all over the place. I keep it out of the water range and it dries so well that it actually sticks a bit to the shelf it’s on.

Most of the product is still there, which is nice for a soap that’s kind of a splurge.

Would i buy again?

I would buy it again- especially for warmer climates when you sweat a lot. I like using the bar on my face which is a change since I normally use a separate cleanser for my body and face. This makes traveling easier with just one soap. I would recommend this for acne-prone skin and as a well-deserved indulgence.

It’s complimentary to the rest of my routine, which involves Herbivore Botanicals Lapis Oil, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream and Jack Black Sun Guard Sunscreen.
